New Directions

Last night I was on a layover in Seattle as part of a routine airline trip. I was walking around town enjoying an unusually warm evening in the port city, my mind wandering. I thought about whether I was doing any real good for dog owners who read my articles. There was the lady who sent me a heartfelt thank you for providing guidance on when to put an old dog to sleep. Another person said she thought this was the go-to source for information about small dogs. And, people are reading the articles. I track statistics on how many people visit the site each day and, of those people who visit, I track how many stick around for more than a few seconds and how many look deeper into the site. The stats aren’t mind-blowing, but they are good enough to motivate me to keep writing. It concerns me that almost no one is commenting. Sites that feature stick figure cartoons or photos of mal-formed potatoes get more comments than this website. Comments are the feedback I need to shape and mold future articles. The absence of comments leaves me wondering whether my articles are doing anyone any good. So here’s what we are going to try:

Let me know what you want to learn more about. What really concerns you about your dog? What fires up your engine and makes you want to join the discussion? Please follow this link to take a survey that should not take more than 3 minutes of your time. It will help me determine how to best serve you and your dog. Thank you!

Well sure, he's quiet now. . .

Today I am going to tell on myself. Maybe I shouldn’t, but here goes anyway. I have a problem with one of our own dogs I cannot solve. Or rather, there are solutions to this problem. I don’t like any of them. Read More…

Scoopin’ the Poopin’

Lately, I’ve been on a tear about the proper way to walk a dog. There is one matter I have not touched upon because I thought it was intuitive. Apparently, it is not. While walking my own dogs in my neighborhood, I have recently had to sidestep many piles of dog poop.

Here is a recent conversation between me and my wife as we were out walking our two dogs, Kelsey and Royce:

“Where do you want to eat dinner tonight?”

“I don’t know. How about—watch it! Poop!”

“I see it. We could go to that Vietnamese place on—LOOK OUT! You almost stepped in that one.”

“Thanks. That Vietnamese place is nice, but we just had Chinese on Tues . . .man, look at that pile!”

“Let’s not talk about dinner anymore. I’ve lost my appetite.” Read More…

Woo hoo! Fish on! Reel 'er in!

A short article today about walking your small dog on a retractable leash. So many people use them that the subject bears a little commentary. Here is my two-cents worth. Read More…

Great Link

Today’s post is a shorty. Since the last few articles have been about how, when and what to feed your dog, I wanted to follow up with a recommendation for a terrific website for those who wish to pursue this topic further. Go to The Dog Food Project. The author, Sabine Contreras, is a certified pet nutritionist with years of study and practical experience. Her website is concise, thorough, and very readable. Pay close attention to her articles about how to read dog food labels.

In previous articles I discussed when to feed and how to feed your dog. When it comes to what to feed your dog, who can you trust? Here is what I mean. If you go to Purina’s website, you are going to find a wealth of information and scientific studies that indicates Purina dog food is best for your dog. If you go to Iam’s website, guess what? You will find Iam’s research has proven its dog food is superior. Ditto Eukanuba. The Royal Canin company will tell you they not only provide the premier dog food on the market, but they also have designed foods tailored to the nutritional needs of specific dog breeds. Science Diet wants you to know everything they sell is the product of careful research. It’s right there in the name. Who’s right and what’s right? Read More…

How to Feed a Small Dog

Chow now.

Chow now.

What a stupid idea for an article, right? Feeding a dog is basic and intuitive.

Step 1. Put the food in a bowl.
Step 2. Put the bowl on the floor.
Step 3. Let the dog eat.
Step 4. Pick the bowl up.
Repeat as necessary.

It’s a piece o’ cake. Not so fast. A guy named Murphy surmised nothing is as simple as it seems. Read More…

Oh boy, is this a controversial topic or what? Okay, perhaps it’s not as controversial as, say, whether the government’s bail out of General Motors is a good idea. (G.M. just declared bankruptcy today, June 1, 2009, so you make the call.) In any case, everyone has an opinion on when to feed a small dog. You can chime in on this topic in the comments section of this article if you wish. For now, here is what I believe to be true about the subject. Read More…

Stylin'!

This is Dolce. His companion? Gabanna, naturally.

Every once in awhile, our groomers get a request for something unusual. This little Yorkie gets a Mohawk trim. We add a little styling gel to keep the magic in place.
